How To Be There For Friends on World Mental Health Day

Today, on World Mental Health Day, I want to pause and reflect on what it really means to check in on each other. When we ask, “How are you?”—are we truly ready to listen? Life can be hectic, and we sometimes forget to slow down and consider what others might be going through. Just because a friend keeps cancelling plans doesn’t mean they don’t want to see you—it might mean they’re struggling in ways you can’t see.

We all love the confidence that comes with “main character energy,” but what does it do for our empathy? Yes, your world is important, but it’s easy to forget that everyone else’s world matters just as much. Sometimes, life’s pressures leave us too exhausted to do much more than send a meme—and that’s okay. Even memes can be a small act of care, a way to remind someone that you’re thinking of them.

Friendships can weather tough times through these little gestures—shared laughter, memories, and the promise of next time. And when we finally get to see the people we care about, let’s make sure to give them—and ourselves—a big hug.

Remember, checking in on yourself is equally important. The noise inside our heads can often be louder than the world around us. We’re always told to be kind to ourselves, but that can be easier said than done. So talk to yourself the way you would your best friend. Keep sending those memes, too—they might be just the reminder someone needs that you’re there 💜
